Cheap Ready-Made Magnifiers

Why do I need to pay for prescription reading glasses when I can get cheap ones from the “$2 Shop”? This is a question we hear all the time and it is a very simple question with a very simple answer.

As we get older, it is absolutely inevitable that we will all need reading glasses. The old adage was always “There are only two things in life that are certain; death and taxes”. Well, the more accurate version is ….death, taxes and reading glasses!”

After the age of about 45, our ability to focus on things close up decreases. This inevitable and ongoing condition is called presbyopia which is a reduced flexibility of the crystalline lens. As more time passes, the prescription required to correct the presbyopia increases. This is why reading glasses need to be regularly updated as we age.

Cheap ready-made magnifiers have a few downfalls:

  • They assume both our eyes are equal in prescription – Rarely!

  • There is no astigmatism correction. Astigmatism comes about from a less than spherical cornea and most of us have some degree of astigmatism.

  • They assume that all eyes are the same distance apart – Almost never!

  • Cheap plastic materials are of a much lesser quality than the laboratory produced CR39 materials your optician will use.

  • You optician will custom make your glasses based on the prescription from your optometrist. This method of producing glasses ensures they are absolutely correct for your vision and will reduce the eyestrain and headaches you can suffer after long-term use of a ready-made magnifier.

So, the next time you feel your arms aren’t quite long enough and you need help reading the small print, book in to see your optometrist/optician so we can use our expertise to help you.
